RELEVANCE OF LEARNING ANALYTICS IN E-LEARNING

According to the Society For Learning Analytics Research

is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for purposes of understanding and optimizing learning and the environments in which it occurs, as defined back in 2011 for the first LAK, this general definition still holds true even as the field has grown. Learning analytics is both an academic field and commercial marketplace which have taken rapid shape over the last decade. As a research and teaching field, Learning Analytics sits at the convergence of Learning (e.g. educational research, learning and assessment sciences, educational technology), Analytics (e.g. statistics, visualization, computer/data sciences, artificial intelligence), and Human-Centered Design (e.g. usability, participatory design, sociotechnical systems thinking).

Learning Analytics is one of the most reliable and effective ways to have a proper look or track how a student or learner is performing or doing and also ensure that any further assistance they might need in any course would be given to them.
Some of the relevance of “Learning analytics” in e learning includes:

1. A Customized E-Learning Experience:

With the aid of learning analytics, online facilitators are able to customize or tailor every E-learning experience towards the specific needs of every student or learner, Since every learner is different and their ability to understand a course also differs. Teachers are able to help their students according to their needs by designing or customizing the resources to suit each learners needs. This gives room for every learner to learn in their own pace and in a more effective manner.

2. It improves student’s grades and enhance productivity:
Learning analytics makes it easier for the teachers to understand their students and vice versa. This will help them to work better and improve their grades. The teachers will also be able to know their students weaknesses and strengths and provide the necessary learning materials that will be useful to them based on the student’s skills and personal preferences which will also enhance productivity.

3.It improves the retention rate of the learners:
Learning Analytics reduces the rate at which students drop out or leave a course since if the learners are not doing well in a particular course, learning analytics gives them access to the necessary materials which will help to improve their performance. This will serve as a source of motivation and encouragement to keep learning and to also put in their best, such that their interests rate will be increased as well as their overall learning performance.

4. It improves the E-Learning Experience of the future learners:
Learning Analytics offers an unparalleled E-Learning experience for every learner such that they can have access to various E-learning courses and modules. This gives them the liberty to choose the ones that is most suitable for them. It will not only improve the learning experience of the current learners, it will also do the same for the future ones. Since all the data and information analysis pertaining to a course will be available for every learner to see and understand it and know which course was easy or challenging. This will help the future learners to opt for the easy courses so as to enhance their chances of success in the course.
